Originally from Atka, Barbara’s family was displaced to Angoon during the war. In 2022, Barbara traveled to Angoon to interview community members, uncovering pieces of her family’s history and reconnecting with a vital chapter of Alaska’s past. This powerful conversation highlights resilience, the importance of storytelling, and the ongoing journey to preserve and understand the histories of displaced Alaska Native communities.

Held at Bettye Davis East High School and West High School in the Spring of 2023. Efrain, a junior at West High School, offers up “Give Me a Passion;  asking friends to share their passion. Efrain researched these passions for a week, then had more informed conversations about that passion.  This podcast takes a dive into a friend’s passion for K-Pop music.

Brooklyn is a Junior at West High School who enjoys the role playing Dungeons and Dragons game. With a group of friends, Brooklyn investigates the creativity of the battles, the journeys, and the characters of D & D experiences.

The Culture and Covid 19 Project took place on Sugpiaq land, and Kodiak youth documented their pandemic journey. The workshop was a partnership between the Kodiak History Museum, Rafael Bitanga, and Marie Acemah, Director of See Stories. The project was funded by the Alaska Community Foundation Social Justice Fund and the Charlotte Martin Foundation.
Joseph is in 10th grade. His podcast focuses on gaming, his favorite pastime — and how his feelings changed about it after COVID-19.

James is going into 9th grade. In his podcast, he embraces his Alutiiq heritage with help from Hannah Sholl, a local Alutiiq artist and educator. Together they explore the themes of historical trauma and cultural resilience, as well as the impact of COVID-19 on Alutiiq communities.

See Stories works to ensure that diverse Alaskans and youth are given the media skills to craft stories better representing the Alaska they know. We lead documentary film and podcast workshops for teens, empower teachers to lead multimedia projects in their classrooms, and share student-produced media with the public to foster a more inclusive Alaskan story and community.
